Abstract

 

The workshop is divided into two ninety minute sessions to present the progress of a US DOT SBIR Phase I, Phase II and on-going Phase IIB project plus the phase II matching fund project from the State of Kentucky. In those projects, an open source microscopic traffic simulation engine called ¡°Enhanced Transportation Flow Open-source Microscopic Model¡±, or ETFOMM, and its Application Program Interface are modeled and developed.  The details of the development is presented in the workshop.

In the First session, applications of advanced computing, including cloud computing, parallel computing and distributed computing in microscopic traffic simulation will be explored. Available options and the practical issues in team efforts will be explained. The major functions of the core simulation engine and its API are discussed.

In the Second session, the focus of the workshop shifts to exemplify how to utilize ETFOMM in research projects and Transportation engineering courses. A hands-on example will be presented to the audience on how to build a Diverging Diamond Interchange using the cloud ETFOMM suite. The Application Programming Interface will be demonstrated through cross platform (Windows/Mac) programs to control traffic signals and interactively move vehicles on freeways. Finally, Applications of ETFOMM in research project and transportation engineering classrooms will be shown.
